Defender Puma - Oil change

Postby WillieE » 14 Oct 2009 10:51

Hi Guys,

I am mechanically challanged so please help. I am heading to 10 000km with my Defender Puma and I want to attempt changing the oil myself. So I have some questions if you guys don't mind helping.

1. Is it a good idea to do this myself?
2. I got the filter already, how much oil?
3. What tools would I need?
4. Where is this filter located?

I am sure some of you guys will just be shaking your heads on this post...LOL.
Thanks
Willie

Will that not invalidate your warranty? Check with the stealer?

Naks,

It probably would I guess...
Bad idea then?
Just don't see why I should pay them R1 500 for something that will cost me R600?
I don't know...

If you buy genuine parts and do inter service oil changes (on 10,000km; 30,000km etc) and still get the scheduled service done at the stealers every 20,000km I doubt that anyone would be able to tell that you had done a oil change.......

An oil change is very easy and shouldn't take you longer than 30 minutes.

It's on the port side of the engine (left) in a black plastic housing with a big hexagon underneath.
I also do mine every 7K in between dealers to give my engine loger life.

Make sure you buy the correct oil being Castrol Magnatec Professional A1 which I could only find at the castrol suppliers.

You are also supposed to buy a new sump plug with o-ring but my old one worked ok with no drips.

If there is paint on the plug - make sure you get similar colour and paint again.

Also pre-fill the filter housing with clean oil to speed up the air lock getting through the system.

Easy job though and dont forget to change the o-ring on the filter hosuing and don't overtighten.

Thank you, this is a very good start.

Think it was about 6,5 liters to go 3/4 on the dipstick.
Remeber to start once to run the oil through the filter etc before taking final reading and final top up
