2.2-litre diesel engines explained
Confusion exists over which 2.2-litre diesel engine are shared between different vehicles.
Land Rover Defender 2.2 TDCi - engine shared with Ford Transit, Ford Ranger and derived from four-cylinder used in previous Ford Mondeo ST TDCi and Jaguar X-Type 2.2D. Engine is NOT shared with Land Rover Freelander and Range Rover Evoque.
Land Rover Freelander/Range Rover Evoque 2.2 eD4/TD4/SD4 - versions of an engine also used in the Jaguar XF and Ford Mondeo, as well as Peugeot 508 and Citroën C5 (uniquely as twin-turbo versions in the French pair), and used in Citroën C-Crosser, Peugeot 4007 and second-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. Engine is NOT shared with Land Rover Defender.
Mazda 2.2D - found in various Mazda products since 2009, this engine is Mazda's own diesel engine and not used in any Ford product (unlike the 1.6-litre diesel found in the Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda5). It was replaced by an all-new 2.2-litre diesel in 2012 with the launch of the CX-5 and is now used in the 2013 Mazda6. Mazda's BT-50, no longer available in the UK, uses the Ford LCV 2.2-litre diesel as used in the Transit and Land Rover Defender.
PSA Peugeot-Citroën 2.2 HDi - the latest version found in the Citroën C5 (and C6 when it was offered in the UK) is related to engines of the same capacity used by Ford (not Ford Ranger or Ford Transit), Jaguar and Land Rover (not Defender).
Mitsubishi Outlander - although the previous version of the Outlander shared a PSA-Ford-developed 2.2-litre diesel engine with the Citroën C-Crosser and the Peugeot 4007, the 2013 Outlander has an all-new 2.2-litre diesel engine developed by Mitsubishi.
Jaguar XF - the 2.2-litre diesel used in the XF is a version of the engine used in the Land Rover Freelander and Range Rover Evoque. It is related to the 2.2 TDCi found in the Ford Mondeo, and the 2.2 HDi offered in the Peugeot 508 and Citroën C5 - although the two French cars use a twin-turbo version.
