The new Range Rover "SPORT" or
baby Range Rover as its been referred internally at Land Rover is
scheduled for 2006. This new baby Range Rover will be positioned between
the Discovery Series III and new Range Rover to be released for 2002. It
will target BMW X5 buyers who prefer the high seating position of an SUV
but with more car like handling and is expected to sit on an all-new
platform being developed for the new Discovery, a traditional
ladder-frame chassis.
The baby rangie may not
offer a low range. As one article reported a Land Rover insider as
stating that "Electronics can do so much now". By 2006 Land
Rover will have re-engineered Jaguar engines for use across the range, a
modified version of Land Rover's ACE system (Active Cornering
Enhancement) and self-leveling air-suspension along with independent
rear-suspension will further enhance handling of the vehicle.
