Exhaust Gas
Temperature Gauges (EGT Gauge) is an engine
monitoring system that reads the air
temperature inside the exhaust manifold.
Fitting one of these to a Tdi or Td5 Land
Rover will give on the spot information
about the engine exhaust temperature being
generated.
Benefits of
an EGT gauge over a coolant temperature
gauge.
The EGT gauge
reads instantaneous Exhaust Gas Temperature
in the exhaust manifold before the turbo.
Excessive heat here will cause engine damage
and damage to the turbo / manifold assembly.
– such as manifold cracks (Tdi), turbo
failure, cylinder head warping or cracking.
All this can happen without your engine
cooling system boiling.
This
temperature has a direct relation to how
hard the engine is working and is much
quicker to respond than the vehicles own
temperature gauge. The vehicle’s standard
temperature gauge is totally useless at
indicating temperature as it has been
“clamped” to remain in the “normal” position
and moves very little with engine
temperature changes. The cooling system will
also “absorb” additional heat the engine
generates making it seem as if everything is
ok.
The EGT will
rise while the engine is making power or
while you are accelerating and it will drop
sharply when you let off the accelerator. An
idling engine will have an EGT of 150 to 200
degrees centigrade. When the engine does
work the temperature can go to over 800
degrees centigrade at which time the engine
will get saturated with heat and it will
start overheating, while going down the
other side of the hill the EGT can drop to
below 200.
Any
temperature of over 720 degrees centigrade
for a long period of time (such as a long
hill) should be avoided at all costs. By
letting off the accelerator by even a tiny
bit the EGT will come down quickly to below
720 thus rescuing your engine from possible
damage.. A conservatively tuned diesel
engine will not reach this temperature
easily, such as a Td5 (600 Deg C) Tdi’s are
usually set a bit richer and will attain
higher EGT’s quicker. Each engine is
different but any of the following could
cause increased inlet temperatures: ·
Blocked intercoolers (internally or
externally) · Restricted air filters. · Bad
injectors · Bad engine timing (Advanced) ·
Blocked exhaust system
It is quite
safe to increase the fuelling on any diesel
engine as long as you are able to monitor
the EGT and prevent it from going over the
threshold maximum temperature.
LandyOnline
offers a range of
EGT Gauges and other
digital
instruments that can be fitted to your
vehicle. All these instruments have
programmable alarms and multiple inputs to
get the most from a single instrument.
We have
custom made temperature probes to suit the
Td5 and Tdi. The other 3 unused channels can
be used to measure engine coolant, gearbox
oil or any other temperature at an
additional cost of the probe and
installation, giving 4 alarmed temperature
readings in one instrument.
