Land Rover Tomb Raider - Lara Croft

A specially modified Tomb Raider Land Rover Defender will star in Paramount Pictures' eagerly anticipated live-action adventure movie "Tomb Raider," which opens in the U.S. and Canada on June 15..Lara Croft's “Tomb Raider” vehicle is based on a high-capacity pickup version of the Defender 110 – a Defender with a 110-inch wheelbase – that has been specially modified by Land Rover Special Vehicles in conjunction with Paramount Pictures. Bonatti Gray in color with aluminum tread plates and bumpers, this unique, open-top Defender is fitted with a "Heritage"-type grille and four Safari driving lights mounted on the front of the roof rack. Extra accessories to aid Lara in her adventures include an expedition tool kit, fender-mounted shovel and axe, winches at the front, rear and sides, a dash-mounted notebook computer, a GPS navigation system, a GSM telephone and emergency kill buttons.

Land Rover has launched a limited edition Tomb Raider vehicle in Britain similar to the version that was specially built for the movie of the same name.

Only 250 of the Defender Tomb Raider LE have been built. It is available in a 90 Station Wagon or 110 Double Cab. It is built on the Defender 90 and 110 platforms, both powered by Land Rover's five-cylinder turbo-diesel rather than the gas-burning V8 in the movie truck. 

Land Rover built two specially outfitted Defender 110s to be used by video game character turned movie star Lara Croft in the film. Each vehicle cost approximately $175 000 (R1,4-million) to build. 

The limited edition vehicles will have similar interior and exterior designs to the movie Land Rover. It will have a Bonatti gray exterior, plus the blackened roof rack, spotlights and, of course, lots of Tomb Raider badges. The Defender 90 will see for £22 995 (R252 945) and the 110 Double Cab for £23 995 (R263 945).

The movie, starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie as Croft, opened last Friday at theatres in South Africa. 

The limited edition Tomb Raider Defender will not be sold in this country. But three Defenders 90, which have been dressed up with Lara Croft-inspired accessories, will arrive in South Africa on Tuesday and will be displayed at cinemas. Land Rover SA has also linked its product to the movie with an extensive advertising campaign.
