Forward Control Models and Specs

Series 1 Series 2 and 2A Series 3 Forward Control

Forward Control Gear-box ratios.

Well, now that I own such a beast, I have been looking up info on gear-box & transfer case ratios for them. The first thing to be aware of is that there are several changes over the 8 years of production. ( not including the 101’s at this stage.) Mine is a 1963 which is one of the first ones. It is a 109inch 2A, suffix a.

The 2A 109inch FC’s were made between 1963 & 66, and had chassis suffix letters a, b ,c, & d. The 2B 110inch FC’s  (actually 109.5inch) were made between 1967 & 71 and had chassis suffix letters a, b, c, d,& e

This one pictured is a 2B with a drop side tray.

The different ratios for the “Forward Control” follows;

 FC 2A Gear-box suffix a.         (286*****a)
1st gear  ratio   2.996 :1
T/Case Low    3.270 :1
T/Case High    1.300 :1
1st Low = 2.19 mph @ 1000 rpm
4th High = 16.5 mph @ 1000 rpm

FC 2A Gear-box suffix b & d.  (286*****b &d) and (300*****b & d) suffix c not used.

1st gear  ratio   3.609 :1
T/Case Low    2.920 :1
T/Case High   1.530 :1
1st Low = 2.04 mph @ 1000 rpm
4th High = 14.1 mph @ 1000 rpm

I wish mine looked this good.

FC 2B Gear-box suffix a & b.   (325*****a & b) and (330*****a & b)

                             1st gear  ratio   3.609 :1
                             T/Case Low    3.270 :1
                             T/Case High   1.530 : 1
This drawing show the Main and the Sub Chassis of a FC 2B

                    1st Low = 1.82 mph @ 1000 rpm

                   4th High = 14.1 mph @ 1000 rpm

The FC’s had the lower transfer case to make up for the 9.00x16 (34inch) tyres fitted. All the diff ratios were 4.7:1 but the 2A Chassis suffix “a” had Rover diffs in front and back. Later had ENV’s fitted. All the FC 2B’s ENV diffs had a 4inch wider track.

The Series Two “One Ton” also had the “FC” G/box-transfer case (2B ratios I think), 9.00x16 tyres and other bits fitted.

Compared this to a standard late 2A “Bonneted Control” L/R with 7.50x16 (31inch) tyres.

1st gear  ratio   3.609 :1
T/Case Low    2.346 :1
T/Case High   1.148 :1
1st Low  = 2.30 mph @ 1000 rpm
4th High = 17.1 mph @ 1000 rpm

                                                                                                                             Leon Z.
